not to be outdone by our gorgeous colton, we had another unplanned trip to the hospital today. this time, it was my sweet caleb. with a broken arm. we started off the day innocently enough with a follow-up doctors appointment for joshie and trip to grandma's. then headed off to the park for park day where the kids got to playing and i got to chatting. after about an half an hour, maryn came to me asking for a snack. as i was digging through my bag for a granola bar, i heard caleb's shrill scream (which is not unusual) and said under my breath, 'that's caleb!' and stood up and walked toward the scene where he was getting up off the ground under the monkey bars with a little help from a kind mom. she looked a little worried as i non-chalantly approached and said to me, 'his arm-i think it's broken.' i looked down at my baby and saw his arm curved like an 's' and his little wrist just dangling when i gasped and grabbed him, scattered, i ran for my things. bro. field (a podiatrist) was there...this was not coincidence-i am sure of it....and he drove me and caleb to the hospital while my other friends cared for the other two children that i forgot i had...and took them to grandma. thank you friends.
i was doing pretty well...holding it together as my baby screamed and the minutes to the hospital seemed like hours. we arrived and i got out and rushed in with my crying child. the lady at the desk asked his name. i opened my mouth to say it and i choked. it wouldn't come out. as tears welled up in my eyes, i somehow got out his name and birthday and that he had a broken arm and they ushered me straight into a room. before long, they had an iv in my boy -- not a pleasant experience -- but the medicine started working and just knocked my baby out. so there we sat--me and caleb crumpled up on the hospital bed. eric had arrived just before the iv and his presence calmed caleb considerably. after an x-ray, we knew for sure that it was a break - a clean break through both the radius and ulna. it was his left arm. caleb is left-handed.
we were in the hospital for about 4 hours through the whole setting and recovery from the anesthesia process. and then got to come home - first to grandma's to collect my 'forgotten ones' and then back home. my plans of a productive day of errands and cleaning had almost passed and i wondered around my house aimlessly and exhausted. i finally settled on the couch, holding my injured boy and watched his 'dora the explorer' dvd. i swear, i have played that scene through my mind at least a hundred times today. i don't even know why. i can't focus. mom brought us delicious dinner which we all inhaled. it was quite a day. after getting the kids to bed, we cuddled up and watched a mindless light hearted movie. i'm ready for bed. i'm ready for a new day. i'm ready for lighter posts on my blog. can we just stay out of the hospitals for a while?
p.s. mom told me that on their way, maryn said to her, "i don't know what i would have done if i had broken my arm because then, how would i be able to look after my brothers?" i thought that was sweet.

I am so sorry. Those heart stopping moments that last to long can really change the way you do things. My prays are with all of you that Caleb doesn't drive you crazy. My daughter broke her arm and managed to wiggle out of her cast 3 times before the month was over. Best of Luck.
How sad!! Hopefully he wakes up this morning feeling great and the time passes fast!!
poor guy! we know all too well how horrible IV's are for kids & how hard it is to see them knocked unconscious. it freaks me out every time. that stinks that it's on his left arm too, the one that he uses. you held yourself together really well, i would have been a hot mess in the car ride there!
That reminds me all too well of when Jacob broke his leg in Rexburg. I felt so bad for him. I always cry too when my kids are in pain.
awwww, your poor little guy and poor you! i don't like trips to the er for my children! you feel so helpless and want to take all of the hurt away!
get well soon caleb!
I'm the wife of Eric's YM PResident when he was younger in Dubois...I hope that makes sense. I just wanted to let you kow that we had a year full of hospital trips a couple of years ago, and I feel your pain. There is nothing worse than seeing your baby in pain. The Lord will give you all the strength that you need. Just take it one step and one day at a time. I love your blog and how much you love your kiddos and husband. I hope this isn't creepy since you don't know me, but you go girl!
Poor little Caleb. We love you guys and hope you are all doing a little better.
I'm sorry. I showed up right after the action! I broke my arm at the part when I was 10. My mom wanted to stay and finish watching the baseball game. Poor guy, it hurts so bad! I'm glad it's all over. Pretty soon he will be hitting his siblings with his cast:) Let me know if you need anything.
